Half of all retirement-age folks in the workforce place a high value on “meaningful work.”

The Woodstock generation has found it necessary to work beyond the traditional retirement age. Case in point: Last year in California, almost 27% of of workers between the ages of 65 and 69 continued to work, putting off retirement. That represents an increase of nearly 20% from ten years ago.

Obviously, the poor economy and the declining stock market has much to do with the baby boomer trend towards remaining in the workforce. Although many companies offer tempting buyouts to older workers, these deals are rarely enough to support current lifestyles. Buyouts are risky as well when one considers rising life expectancies. Today’s active, vibrant 65-year old, is not your grandfather’s 65-year old!

Baby boomers who lose their jobs or are seeking new opportunities often face age discrimination. Only 60% of workers 55 and older who lose their jobs are reemployed at similar levels within two years.

Baby boomers in search of meaningful work, represent a wealth of talent. Generally speaking, they bring invaluable experience and stability to the table.

One avenue for idealistic seniors who wish to find meaningful work in their later years, is working from home. A home business oriented towards advocating for wellness in all its forms — social, intellectual, financial, environmental and physical can be immensely satisfying — not to mention financially rewarding.
